Summary:
The Underwriter I is responsible for executing strategic initiatives and achieving financial objectives within the underwriting department to support the company's revenue and profitability targets. This role involves underwriting new and renewal insurance applications, understanding exposures associated with each risk, determining risk acceptability, and establishing appropriate pricing. The Underwriter I collaborates closely with agents to drive new submission opportunities, deliver best-in-class customer service, and works with internal departments such as Loss Control, Marketing, and Claims to ensure a successful experience for agents, policyholders, and internal stakeholders.
A Commercial Underwriter evaluates the risk associated with insuring businesses and commercial entities to determine appropriate coverage and premium levels. Key responsibilities include:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Responsible for quoting new and renewal business.
· Review submissions from agents, ensuring all required documentation is complete (applications, loss runs, etc.)
· Review and assess all eligible new and renewal business submissions to maximize profitability and retention.
· Analyze and document risks for business eligibility in support of the company’s Underwriting guidelines.
· Delivers timely issuance of quotations, policies, renewals, endorsements and cancellations.
· Develop high quality company-agency and company-client working relationships.
· Maximizes agency and policyholder retention.
· Obtains experience mod and ownership information from NCCI and NCRB for all risks.
· Works with new prospective agents to build relationships, sell culture, and build mutual growth.
· Delivers timely customer service to clients, company personnel, and agency partners.
· Conducts all business in a professional manner and with the highest ethical standards.
· Maintains confidentiality of all information obtained during the course of employment.
· Continue professional growth and development through assisting with company projects, participating in company events, insurance industry functions and through self-study.
· Review monthly reports, individual results and goals and implement necessary changes to ensure strategic initiatives and operational objectives are being met.
· Manage book of business and agency related results and concerns by monitoring reports and communications and facilitate collaboration between Underwriters, Claims, Risk Management and others as outlined in the Interdepartmental Communication Requirements document.
· Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in insurance or business or related degree is preferred. Two or more years of underwriting experience.
Licenses/Credentials
Insurance designations (CPCU, CIC, or equivalent) are a plus.
